Restoring Strength While Preserving What’s Natural

Cavity Repair

When a tooth is weakened by decay or minor damage, a filling is the most conservative way to rebuild what has been lost. A properly placed restoration restores the natural shape of the tooth so it can chew comfortably, resist further breakdown, and function in harmony with surrounding teeth.

Modern fillings are designed to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

The goal is simple: remove diseased tissue, seal the area, and reinforce the remaining enamel and dentin so the tooth remains strong for years to come.

Why Fillings Matter

Cavities begin as small areas of enamel breakdown. Left untreated, they can progress deeper into the tooth and compromise its stability. Early treatment keeps care simple and predictable.

Fillings may be recommended to:

  • Treat tooth decay
  • Repair small fractures
  • Restore chipped areas affecting function
  • Replace worn or failing older fillings
  • Reinforce weakened tooth structure

By addressing problems early, we reduce the likelihood of needing more extensive treatment later.

The Materials We Use

At Galligan Family Dentistry, we focus on durable, aesthetic, and biocompatible materials.

Composite Fillings

Composite resin is the most common material we use. It bonds directly to the tooth, allowing for a conservative preparation and excellent cosmetic blending.

Composite fillings:

  • Match the natural shade of your tooth
  • Preserve more healthy structure
  • Reinforce weakened enamel
  • Work well for both front and back teeth

When properly placed and maintained, composite restorations provide long-lasting strength and appearance.

Ceramic Inlays and Onlays

When a larger portion of the tooth requires restoration but a full crown is not necessary, ceramic inlays or onlays may be recommended.

These restorations:

  • Are custom fabricated for precise fit
  • Provide excellent durability
  • Offer superior aesthetics
  • Restore larger chewing surfaces

Ceramic restorations are bonded to the tooth and provide strong, long-term performance when more support is needed than a direct filling can provide.

How We Choose the Right Restoration

Selecting the appropriate treatment depends on:

  • The size and location of decay
  • The amount of healthy tooth remaining
  • Bite forces and chewing patterns
  • Long-term durability needs

If a cavity is small, a composite filling is typically ideal. If a larger portion of the biting surface is compromised, a ceramic inlay or onlay may offer better long-term stability.

We explain recommendations clearly so you understand the reasoning behind each option.

What to Expect During Treatment

Placing a filling is a routine and comfortable procedure. First, we gently numb the area, often using Wand Single Tooth Anesthesia Systems. These pen-like devices deliver anesthetic slowly and precisely, allowing us to numb just the tooth being treated without prolonged, widespread numbness or "big scary needles".

Once the tooth is numb:

  • Decay is carefully removed
  • The area is cleaned and prepared
  • The filling material is placed, shaped, and polished
  • Your bite is checked to ensure it feels natural and balanced

Composite fillings are fully hardened before you leave the office. After the numbness wears off, most patients return to normal activities the same day.

Aftercare and Longevity

With proper brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits, well-placed fillings can last for many years. During regular exams, we evaluate both new and existing restorations to ensure they remain properly sealed and supportive.

Over time, fillings placed years ago, whether in our office or elsewhere, can wear down, develop small gaps, or weaken under normal chewing forces.

Contact us if you experience:

  • Persistent sensitivity
  • A rough or sharp edge
  • Pain when biting
  • A feeling that the filling is loose

Addressing small concerns early protects the underlying tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Fillings

If you have additional questions about dental fillings or would like to schedule an exam, our team is here to help. Early evaluation is the best way to protect your natural teeth and keep treatment straightforward.

A Conservative Approach to Care

Our philosophy is centered on preserving natural teeth whenever possible. Fillings allow us to treat decay efficiently while maintaining strength, comfort, and appearance.

If you suspect you may need a filling or are experiencing sensitivity or discomfort, a comprehensive exam and updated X-rays will help us determine the next step. In many cases, treatment can be completed the same day as your evaluation.
