Abigail Scanlan, DDS

Owner and General Dentist

Dr. Abigail Scanlan is the owner and primary dentist of Galligan Family Dentistry, bringing a thoughtful, patient-centered approach to comprehensive dental care. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine after completing her undergraduate studies at New York University.

Since beginning her career, Dr. Scanlan has practiced dentistry throughout North Carolina. Her experience includes serving patients in Wake Forest, working alongside a prosthodontist in Asheville, and most recently practicing in a family dental office in Arden. These roles allowed her to care for patients across a wide range of ages and clinical needs while developing a well-rounded foundation in preventive, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry.

Her professional journey helped clarify the kind of practice she wanted to lead, one rooted in thorough care, clear communication, and long-term relationships with patients. She values a balanced approach that prioritizes prevention, thoughtful treatment planning, and attention to comfort at every visit.

Dr. Scanlan is a member of the American Dental Association and the North Carolina Dental Society and remains committed to continuing education through respected organizations such as The Pankey Institute and Spear Education.

She is proud to lead Galligan Family Dentistry and to provide consistent, comprehensive care for the community she and her family call home.

The Scanlan Family

Dentistry is an important part of Dr. Scanlan’s life, but family is at the center of it. She and her husband, Jesse, have been married for ten years and are raising their children here in the same community the practice serves.

Their home is full of energy. Zoey Rose, age five, is thoughtful and spirited. Chloe, three, brings her own spark to everything she does. Lucas, at 18 months, keeps everyone moving, and their youngest daughter, Stella, just arrived in May of this year. Life is busy, joyful, and wonderfully full.

When they are not at the office, music is usually playing in the kitchen. The Scanlans love cooking together, sharing meals with friends and extended family, and dancing around the house with their kids. Food has always been part of how they connect, and they have even created a family cookbook to preserve the recipes and traditions they treasure.

For Dr. Scanlan, caring for families feels natural because she is living it every day. The same warmth and attentiveness she brings to her own home are qualities she carries into the care of the families she serves.

Michele Crane, RDH

Dental Hygienist

Michele brings more than 20 years of experience in dental hygiene and has been caring for patients at Galligan Family Dentistry for over seven years. For many families, she is a familiar and reassuring presence, someone who has shared in their milestones and helped them maintain healthy smiles year after year.

She has a strong commitment to preventive care and takes time to explain oral health in a way that feels approachable and easy to understand. Michele’s gentle manner and attentive nature help patients of all ages feel comfortable and relaxed during their visits.

Building lasting relationships is one of the most meaningful parts of her work. Michele values the trust patients place in her and is grateful to continue caring for the families who call this practice their dental home.

Brittany Mize, RDH

Dental Hygienist

New to our team, Brittany often says she “married into dentistry,” and she means it. Watching her husband practice dentistry and seeing the impact he had on his patients inspired her to pursue the field herself. What began as admiration for his passion for care grew into her own calling. She went on to earn her degree in dental hygiene and became a Registered Dental Hygienist, bringing both skill and heart to the profession.

With four children of her own, Brittany understands the pace and priorities of family life. She knows what it feels like to juggle schedules, care for growing kids, and try to stay on top of everyone’s health. That perspective shapes the way she connects with patients, especially parents and children.

Brittany has a natural way of helping people feel comfortable in the dental chair. She values prevention, patient education, and clear communication, believing that when patients understand their oral health, they feel more confident caring for it. Her calm presence and thoughtful approach make her a reassuring part of each visit.

She is grateful to be part of the Galligan Family Dentistry team and looks forward to building lasting relationships with the families we serve.

Miniimah Salaam, CDA

Dental Assistant

Miniimah has been part of the Galligan Family Dentistry family for over three years and brings more than twelve years of experience in dentistry with her, ten as a certified dental assistant. She is often the steady, reassuring presence patients see during their visits, helping them feel comfortable and cared for from the moment they sit down.

She has a calm and thoughtful way about her that puts both children and adults at ease. Miniimah genuinely enjoys connecting with patients and takes pride in helping create a smooth, positive experience during every appointment.

Her passion for dentistry continues to grow. Inspired by the impact preventive care can have on families, Miniimah plans to further her education and pursue her goal of becoming a dental hygienist. Her dedication to learning and her heart for patient care make her a valued part of the team and the community we serve.

Kim Duffy

Front Desk / Receptionist

Kim has been a familiar and friendly face at Galligan Family Dentistry for almost eight years. Many of our patients know her voice on the phone before they ever walk through the door, and her welcoming presence sets the tone for each visit.

She has a natural gift for helping people feel at ease. Whether answering questions, helping families coordinate busy schedules, or simply offering reassurance, Kim approaches each interaction with patience and care. Patients often comment on how comfortable and understood they feel when speaking with her.

Over the years, Kim has built meaningful relationships with many of the families who visit the practice. Her steady presence has provided a sense of familiarity and continuity, especially during our recent transition. She values getting to know the people behind the appointments and takes pride in being part of a practice that feels personal and welcoming.

Loren Smith

Front Desk / Receptionist

Loren joined Galligan Family Dentistry following the practice transition in January and has quickly become a welcoming presence at the front desk. She loves getting to know patients beyond their appointments, and one of her favorite parts of the job is hearing about their lives, families, and personal experiences.

Known for her friendly and approachable nature, she enjoys answering questions about the practice and especially loves helping families understand the ways we care for children. She is passionate about making patients feel comfortable from the moment they arrive and takes pride in helping ease dental anxiety with reassurance, patience, and a warm smile.

Originally from Roanoke, Virginia, she has called Raleigh home since 1975. She has been married for 32 years and is the proud mother of two children and grandmother of three. Outside the office, she enjoys life on three acres with her husband, their dog, cat, and a flock of chickens.

Jesse Hall

Practice Operations Manager

Jesse’s connection to dentistry began long before Galligan Family Dentistry became part of his family’s story. He and Dr. Scanlan were married while she was in dental school a decade past, and he witnessed firsthand her dedication, the long nights, and the heart she poured into becoming a dentist. From the very beginning, he was part of that season, cooking meals, baking snacks, making flashcards, and helping her prepare for exams during those long stretches of study.

Today, Jesse works alongside his wife, supporting the practice in whatever ways are needed so she and the clinical team can remain focused on caring for patients. Much of his time is spent behind the scenes, though you will occasionally see him around the office, especially if something needs attention, improvement, or a steady hand.

As mentioned earlier on this page, Jesse and Dr. Scanlan are raising their four young children here in the same community the practice serves, with another little one on the way. For their family, this office represents more than a place of work. It is part of the life they are building together. Being present, committed, and rooted in this community matters deeply to him.

He is grateful to support Dr. Scanlan in this chapter and to be part of the practice that serves the families who trust their care to Galligan Family Dentistry.

Image

Ryan Galligan, DDS, FAGD, FAOS, FIAO

Founder and General Dentist (NOW RETIRED)

Dr. Ryan Galligan was the founder of Galligan Family Dentistry and proudly served families in North Raleigh, Wake Forest, and the surrounding communities for many years. A native North Carolinian, he earned his undergraduate degree with honors from North Carolina State University and his dental degree from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry.

Throughout his career, Dr. Galligan pursued extensive advanced training in general, pediatric, and orthodontic dentistry, earning fellowship distinctions from the Academy of General Dentistry and the International Association for Orthodontics. His clinical focus remained centered on comprehensive, patient-focused care and long-term oral health for growing families.

Over the years, Dr. Galligan helped establish a practice known for treating patients like family. His commitment to clinical excellence, continuity of care, and strong patient relationships created a lasting impact on generations of families throughout the community.

In early August, Dr. Galligan saw his last patient and officially began the transition into retirement. Before stepping away from clinical practice, he completed ongoing treatment plans, supported a smooth transition of care, and helped ensure that the values and standards that defined Galligan Family Dentistry would continue for years to come.

Dr. Galligan is deeply grateful for the trust and friendships built throughout his career and takes great pride in the practice he helped create. As he enjoys retirement, he looks back fondly on the relationships, milestones, and countless smiles that made his years in dentistry so rewarding, while remaining confident in the future of the practice and the team that will carry its legacy forward.

Vicki Galligan

Front Desk / Receptionist (NOW RETIRED)

Vicki was part of Galligan Family Dentistry from the very beginning. Alongside Dr. Galligan, she helped build the practice into a place where families felt comfortable, known, and cared for. A North Carolina native and graduate of North Carolina State University, she brought both organization and heart to the front desk, helping shape the welcoming experience that patients came to appreciate over the years.

Vicki and Dr. Galligan raised their two children alongside the practice itself. In the early days, one of the unused offices even served as a nursery so their babies could be close while they worked. Their children quite literally grew up in the practice, spending afternoons after school and summers around the office. That deep connection between family and workplace became an important part of the culture at Galligan Family Dentistry, where family values and priorities have always mattered.

Throughout her years with the practice, Vicki was a familiar and reassuring presence for generations of patients. She played a vital role in supporting the front office, helping guide the team, and ensuring that every patient felt welcomed and cared for.

In April, Vicki scheduled her last patient appointment before officially retiring. As she transitioned into this new chapter, she remained deeply grateful for the relationships and friendships built over the years and took great pride in the families she had the privilege to serve. Today, she is enjoying retirement alongside Dr. Galligan and cherishing more time with family, friends, and the many memories made throughout her remarkable career.
